Alarm.com Logins Are Separate From User Codes: Give Everyone Their Own Login
The office manager needs the Alarm.com app. So someone texts them the owner's username and password. It works. But now you can't tell who logged in, and the office manager can do everything the owner can.
A user code is what a person uses at the system to disarm it. A login is the username and password for the Alarm.com website and app. Alarm.com recommends that everyone who uses the app has a separate login. To add one, log in through a web browser, click Users, and follow the steps for the layout on your screen. Alarm.com describes two layouts, and both are below.
An Alarm.com login and a user code are two different things, and each person should have their own of each. Alarm.com's help page says so directly.
Already sorting out codes? Start with our guide to adding and deleting Alarm.com user codes. This article is about the other half: the logins.
Codes and logins: what each one does
- User code: used to disarm the system. Alarm.com's advice is to give each person who needs to disarm the system their own code, so you always know who disarmed it.
- Login: used to sign in to the Alarm.com website and mobile app. Alarm.com's advice is to give each person their own secondary login, so you always know who logged in, and so you can limit their access to specific devices.
One doesn't replace the other. Alarm.com sets them up separately. Someone who leaves needs both removed. Our offboarding checklist covers the full list.
Add a login for someone
Alarm.com describes two layouts for the Users page and doesn't say which accounts have which. Use the steps that match your screen, or ask your alarm company. Alarm.com's FAQ says to complete login creation in a web browser. Repeat the steps for each person. Older layout, from Alarm.com's Consumer FAQ:
- Log in to the Alarm.com website in a browser on your laptop, computer or mobile device.
- Click Users on the left side of the screen.
- Click Manage Logins at the top of the Users page.
- Click Add a login.
- Enter the person's email address and the login name you want them to use.
- Click Save.
- Select the permission level for this login. Alarm.com says this limits what the login can do in the app and on the website.
- Choose which devices the person can see and control from their app or the website.
- Click Save at the bottom of the page.
Alarm.com's Knowledge Base lists five permission levels: Master Control, Full Control, Read Only, Limited Device Access and Custom. Master Control has all the permissions of the primary account user, including managing website logins. Updated Users layout, from Alarm.com's Updated Users page: click Users, select the person's name, then select Add Login. To change what the person can do, click Users, select their name, then select App Access. Alarm.com says the app follows the same steps on this layout, but offers only Master Control, Full Control and Read Only. Pick the lowest level that lets the person do their job.
If you don't see Users or Manage Logins, your own login may not have permission. Ask whoever manages the account.
Use each person's own email
Alarm.com says a password reset link goes to the primary email address for that login. So a login set up with a shared mailbox sends every reset to the same place. Use the person's own work email.
Turn on two-factor authentication
Alarm.com offers Two-Factor Authentication as an extra step. After a username and password, the person enters a code sent by text message or email. Alarm.com says you can turn it on from the customer website or the app, and that it's currently available in the United States and Canada. Alarm.com calls it a best practice.
What to check on the logins you already have
Click Users, then Manage Logins, and look at the list. Ask:
- Does every name belong to someone who works with you today?
- Is anyone sharing a login?
- Does anyone have more access than their job needs?
- Does the list include an alarm company or installer you no longer use? Leave your current alarm company's login alone.
Alarm.com's Updated Users page says to remove a login by clicking Users, selecting the person's name, clicking Username, then Delete Login. Before you delete anything, make sure at least one login you control keeps full access, and leave your current alarm company's login alone. If you don't recognize a login or aren't sure it is safe to remove, call us. If your alarm company is the problem, see what to do when your alarm company stops answering and your old security vendor may still have access.
If you'd rather not do it alone
If you can't find Manage Logins, don't recognize a login on the list, or aren't sure who your alarm company is, call PAX at (855) 440-5353 or email info@paxsecurity.com. You can also reach us through https://paxsecurity.com/contact-us. We will talk through your options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give the office manager the app without the owner's login?
Yes. That is what a separate login is for. Create one in a browser and choose its permission level and devices.
Can someone with a login control the system?
It depends on the permission level and the devices you choose. Alarm.com says a Read Only login can't change arming state or device status, while Master Control has all the permissions of the primary account user. That's why you pick the level on purpose.
Can I create a login from the app?
Alarm.com's Consumer FAQ says to complete login creation in a web browser. Its Updated Users page says the app follows the same steps as the website on that layout, with only Master Control, Full Control and Read Only to choose from.
How many logins can I create?
Alarm.com says you can create separate logins for any number of users.
Will two-factor authentication work for everyone?
Alarm.com says it's currently available in the United States and Canada.
